January 22nd to 26th

TED Talk of the Week
This TED Talk explores some Mind-blowing, magnified portraits of insects.  Here is the website you may want to share with students

Thank you!
  • All faculty and teaching staff for a great 1st week back.  Your positivity and professionalism helped overcome the jet lag.
  • Ryk and Shelly for leading our Monday afternoon PD.  You helped us start the new year on the right foot
  • Theresa and Sara for welcoming new students to KISJ. You helped create a good first impression for our students.
  • Shelly and the ELL team for creating the extra supports classes that will help our students who are struggling to speak the connecting language in class.  Together we will help all students succeed at KISJ! Cynthia and all activity teachers for getting Q3 activities up and running.
  • Bin and Bonnie for organizing the new student materials for the ES while we were all away.
Support for our Students
Beginning January 22nd
  • Students who do not use the connecting language in class or in the hallways will receive a reminder from their teacher.
  • If a specialist gives a student a reminder, they will email the HRT the students name.
  • If a Student receives multiple reminders during the day the HRT will send an email to Cynthia, Bin, and Bonnie with the students name
  • The ES Office will then organize a time for the student to receive extra language support during 1 activity class. These classes are planned by the ELL Specialist teachers.
This is an example of the types of activities the students will do in the support classes.
"Round Table Activity" which works as follows:
Prepare a list of unfinished sentences and give one copy to each student in class. Allow 10 minutes or so for students to complete the sentences in writing, using true facts from material they’ve read or learned about recently. Students then partner up and share responses. Ask them to rotate after a set amount of time and share with a new partner.  To ensure the student(s) have access to the sentence stems, they will be given a pre-printed list of sentence stems which they must have during whole group time. That way they can refer to those sentence stems in class.

Q3 Letter to Parents
As an FYI, here is the Q3 letter to parents.
ES Principal Survey Results
Here are the results of the ES Principal Survey.  Your feedback outlines successes and areas of growth to focus on.
Area for Growth:  This survey and the comments highlight the continued need for clearer procedures.  This is especially true for reporting on and assessing student work.  There has been some frustration with the new reporting system and the lack of alignment on PS.  For the past few months I have been working with Ryk and the ES Leadership team to create these guidelines.
In January, we will introduce guidelines for how the ES uses student assessments to inform teaching and learning.  These guidelines will also align assessment data on PS.

F&P Testing Dates
The ES should have all F&P testing done by January 31st.  If this is not possible let Jim or Ryk know so we can support.
