TED Talk of the Week
The “TED Talk” this week is the video about Responsive Classroom from our Friday morning meeting. I invite you to follow the links from the video for more detailed information.
Thank you!
- Judy and Nicole for the newest art installation in the ES. DRAGONS really do walk on rainbows!
- Angelia, for organizing and hosting the ELL breakfast PD webinar with Andrea Honigsfeld and Maria Dove.
Communication in the ES
This Friday the ES looked at Responsive Classroom as a PD option for the 2019/20 school year. Together we built a common understanding and then looked at the logistics to bring a trainer to KISJ. We had rich discussions and I look forward to seeing what the ultimate decision will be. Remember, this is an ES decision that has the potential to change the school culture. The comments from the Exit Tickets will be in the teachers room on the 3rd floor.
Let’s Chat
This week I have 3 times booked for you to come in and chat or I can come to your classroom to read to students.
Monday 11:30 to 12:00
Tuesday 9:30 to 10:00
Wednesday 3:00 to 3:30
Responsive Classroom Information
I have good news, the Responsive Classroom Trainer contacted me and we were able to get a discounted price of $32,000. So the new totals are: HRT =$198 (3 days), Specialist = $66 (1 day). This information is included in the Responsive Classroom Proposed Plan. Also, please complete the Responsive Classroom Decision by Monday afternoon.
From the ES Suggestion Box
“There has been an increase in apartment and business flyers placed on the KISJ staff cars each day. It is frustrating to come out to your car with three or four flyers on it that ultimately go in the trash or fly away. Is there anything that can be done about this?” Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have contacted CCT and they will contact the relevant office and ask to stop the distribution of promotional materials and the security guard will check the parking lot regularly.
The Month Ahead for April
The focus for the month of April will be on completing Professional Growth Plans. I highly suggest you review this document to ensure you are familiar with the expectations. Mareena and I will be conducting unannounced 30-minute observations this month. Once you have completed your Professional Growth Portfolio, schedule your Professional Evaluation Conference with the person who is supervising you. You will be asked to complete a self-evaluation using the professional evaluation rubric. You do not have to make a copy of this, your personal document will be shared with you. This all should be completed by May 10th. If you have any questions about the process or dates, speak with the person who is supervising you.
To summarize:
- Observation (unannounced)
- Complete Professional Growth Portfolio (you already have this)
- Complete self-evaluation (document to be shared with you)
- Schedule Professional Evaluation Conference before May 10, but after the three items above are completed
April 15 - 19 - Spring Bookfair
April 16 - Morning N&B meeting

G3 Lunch Recess - Shift to Stadium Field
Monday, April 15th we will return to the start of the year recess plan, with grade 3 on the stadium field for the rest of this school year.
Please use the crossing path area to cross the street. Security will be reminded to help with the crossing at 10:30 and 10:55.
AQI Flag
Please note that we have added a red flag that will be placed at the entrance gate in the morning if the air quality requires an indoor arrival. This information is also being shared with parents.
Policies Feedback
The first document to be revised is the School and Dorm Life Guide. This includes the policies that we use to guide our procedures. Next week, you will have a chance to provide feedback on ES specific policies. Charts will be in the 3rd floor teacher meeting room until Friday.
Behavior Plan
The current behavior policy is outlined in the School and Dorm Life Guide. As I previously mentioned, it is our desire to continue to move to a more restorative approach to our discipline. If you are interested in helping revise the existing policy, this work will be completed next week. Please contact Mareena directly with your interest.

To all faculty, staff, and students from all divisions of our school community,
On behalf of the G8 teachers and students who organized the Camellia Flower campaign to help remember Jeju 4.3 history:

Grade 8 Learning Celebration
The G8 teachers would like to invite ANY of our school community to come and celebrate student learning with the grade 8 class. This will occur in BOTH the MS and HS PAC's from 10:15 - 12:00. ANY teachers, students, and staff are invited to attend some, or all, of the time.
If anyone should have any questions, please email Brian Elshoff.
Magma Sports Baseball
Here is a link to a letter that was posted on the Elementary School PAB last Friday. It is regarding Magma Sports Baseball that I am helping organize for ES-aged students. If your child is in elementary school or if you are just interested in volunteering to help coach baseball, please let me know. - Paul Boland

Classroom Visits from Admissions
Next week Saeree may come by your classroom to see some of the great things students are learning. This is not an observation of teachers, it just helps her know what is going on so she can explain better to prospective parents.

Updates From Mr. Vento
All KISJ faculty and staff are invited to the New Jersey Cafe & Lounge (close to Osulloc Tea Museum) on Friday, May 3 from 5:00-7:00 pm to acknowledge and celebrate friends and colleagues who are departing at the end of the school year. Light snacks and a drink will be provided. Please RSVP by no later than April 23 if you are planning to attend. More details to follow. Apologies and recognition to our dorm staff who will be working at this time and are unable to attend this event.
All small change has been made to the 2019-20 KISJ Academic Calendar to reflect the start date for quarter 4 and that we will be hosting only 3 SAT test dates. No other changes have been made to this calendar.
In an effort to improve our admissions process and ensure the success of new students, our Director of Admissions, Ms. Saeree Moon will be observing classrooms in each division during the week of April 15. Please let her know if her presence is disruptive so she can return at an alternative time.
