TED Talk of the Week
This week’s TED Talk is a recommendation from Amos. It explores the idea that happiness makes us more productive.  I hope we can all apply at least one of the recommendations over the last month we have till winter vacation.

Thank You!
  • Shelly, Elaine, Angela, Paula, and Eric presenting at the DRAGON Dialogue this week.  You all gave our parent community a clear picture of how KISJ supports language development.
  • Francis, for having the G1A students sing at the DRAGON Dialogue.  You provided the perfect intro for our parents.
  • Eric and Elaine, for presenting ELL Strategies in Reader's Workshop at the KORCOS conference last weekend. You are sharing your knowledge with the greater educational community.

Mission Statement Crowdsourcing
This is NOT a compulsory task. Only participate if you want to make a suggestions.
Part 2 of our efforts to create an ES mission statement is to give you the opportunity to craft a mission statement yourself, based on the data received during our PD.
Here are the comments, exactly copied, which had the most number of 'dot responses' from the November 10 PD. Read the comments and have a go at constructing your own mission statement based on these responses. You do not have to include all the points that are written here.
  • Dragons and E's
  • What should our ideal child look like - critical thinker, life-long learner, compassionate.
  • Providing an American standards-based education.
  • 4 core Dragon values.
  • Working together, all stakeholders foster an emotionally safe, child centered community focused on the holistic development of life long learners.
  • Working together families, staff and students.
  • Creating a safe, culturally responsive environment.
  • Language rich environment.
  • Committed to teaching growth mindset.
  • Our Dragon values. An engaging, emotionally safe community for our learners.
Example - KIS aims to provide, in an emotionally safe and engaging environment, an American, standards referenced, literacy rich curriculum, in order to develop students as critical thinkers, life-long learners and compassionate community members. All this is done within the framework of our Dragon values.

From the Suggestion Box
During PTCs, I had a parent ask about our school's practice of passing out awards from outside competitions and organizations to our students. I too have similar confusion about why those awards are sent to KISJ and why teachers are expected to hand them to our students and give them a hand in front of their classmates. It's understandable that students getting an award in front of their classmates will make them feel special, but the question is whether or not that is appropriate, especially when the competition/award is for something outside of KISJ, and for something not all parents/students were informed of. Can we possibly change the policy so that students only receive recognition at school if it is for a competition/event that all students/parents were notified about and given an opportunity to join? To that end, we could also do more to publicize these kinds of competitions if we are looking to encourage our students to join them. With the current status quo, I believe we are breeding more frustration and jealousy than pride and self-esteem.
Thank you for bringing this question to my attention.  As a school (ES-HS) outside awards are given out at school.  The purpose is to show that KISJ values students efforts outside of the school community.  This is something I can bring to the attention of the leadership team for review.
