The TED talk for this week is a recommendation from Ryk. This week the ES Leadership Team discussed this video and how great leaders inspire action.
Thank you
- Thank you amazing ES team! Aqua Day was our first whole school event and it was a SPLASHING success. We all pulled together to make memories that will last a lifetime.
- Allan, Scott, Rhys, and Joseph for organizing an outstanding Aqua Day. Once again you exceeded expectations.
- S1 ES coaches, Judy, Madeleine, Sean Doran, Kara O’Connor, Eric Rosenthal, Jordanna, Layne, Feliz, Allan, Rhys, Nicole, and Matt Gratz. Your willingness to challenge students outside of the regular school day is greatly appreciated by the students and KISJ community!
- Ryk, for organizing and troubleshooting MAP issues. Your dedication and hard work helps us get the information needed to understand how we can target student instruction.
- Tessa and Dana, for organizing a police visit for our JK students.
- Communication assembly volunteers: Cody, Sara Roberts, Rhys, Francis, Nicole, Jenni, Sean, Elaine, Jessica, and Jordanna. You all are the trailblazers as the ES explores how to integrate communication awareness into Q1.
- Sara R, Theresa, Esther, and Sarah Ko for running the Student Safety Presentation this Friday. We had very rich and insightful discussions as a school.
ES Potluck
The ES deserves a moment to connect and enjoy a morning together. On September 14th from 8:00 to 8:50 we will have our first ES Potluck. Here is a sign-up sheet. Feel free to make or buy something to share. Starbucks Coffee will be provided by the school. If you can not make or buy something that is fine too :)
Updates From Mareena
Quarter 1: Focus on Communication!
Look for new displays coming to the ES entrance!
Dorm Commitments
Caitlin will have a session about dorm commitments on Monday at 4:00 in E315 for new teachers. Returning staff can join if you have questions about how to fulfill you dorm duties this year!
Lunchroom/Snack
If you are on lunch duty, please stay in your area and help with student monitoring during lunch and snack. This includes during clean up. We’ve requested additional support and stations for cleaning, and need teachers on duty to stay on monitoring.
Recess Equipment
Those on duty are responsible for picking up and returning recess equipment. We were doing well with only one last ball. I am now missing an ENTIRE bag and we have one left with 4 soccer balls…
Students should return the equipment they use at the end of the break, but staff should monitor that it happens.
Please return lost items if you have them or have accidentally not returned from this week.
Typhoon makeup day
We will have our Typhoon makeup day on Saturday November 10th from 8:00am-12:30pm unless there is another incident which interrupts a full day of school before November 10th. Busses to depart at 12:45pm, teachers may leave thereafter. Parents, please consider child care options for children who are not yet school age and plan accordingly.
Electives - Quarter 2

Uniform information
Uniform expectations will be enforced starting Monday, September 10th due to delays with shipping of orders.
Class Blogs
Include Mareena on weekly/bi-weekly communication to parents with a blog update. If your grade level has a shared site, it should still be sent to each homeroom by HRTs.
Specialists, PowerSchool communication is back up for sending to all students you work with.
Emergency Evacuation
By Monday, all evacuation procedure plastic holders should be installed. Let April know if you do not have all of the items. There should be a binder with the homeroom list, red/green card, all clear door tag, a procedures document, and two maps. One map should be in the binder and one attached to the wall by the door.
Free Stuff!
We have a few boxes of science supplies that teachers can take for classrooms. There are also empty boxes that held these supplies. Go to room E311 (Substitute office/Science storage room) DO NOT remove items from shelves, only the boxes on the floor are available!

Information from Dorms
As you know, spending time in the dorms is a way for you to fulfill your faculty commitment in the 2018-19 school year. You can fulfill a commitment in the dorms in a variety of ways, including hosting academic support sessions during study halls and leading a pastoral care event for ES students. For more details, please reference this presentation.
The Dorms are now ready for faculty to fill out the ES Faculty Commitment sheet. Please indicate on this spreadsheet how you plan to fulfill your seasonal commitment, and in which season. If you indicate that you will fulfill your commitment in the dorms, Caitlin Wampler (cwampler@kis.ac) will contact you directly.
All teachers are expected to fill out this spreadsheet by Sunday, September 16.
Please feel free to contact Caitlin Wampler or Ben Fisk if you have any questions, and I hope to see you in the dorms!
