Weekly Update August 27th to 31st

TED Talk of the Week
The TED talk for this week is a fascinating look at a growing maker community where people engage in peer-to-peer, hands-on education, motivated by what they want to create.

Thank you

Updates From Mareena
Quarter 1: Focus on Communication!
Communication is not just important for our students - we will incorporate a weekly focus on communication this quarter.
It's time to sign up for your electives for quarter 2. Please use this spreadsheet to fill out your elective name and description. Locations are limited, so if you'd like to use a space other than your classroom please request that on the spreadsheet.
New staff, here is John's very detailed document about electives. Please let Mareena know if you have questions about signing up, as she will be taking over the facilitation of electives for the remainder of the year.

Uniform information
Use this document as a reference for student uniform checks. Please note that starting September 1st, students should be in correct uniform.
NEW: As of January 1, all student shoes should be black. This information will be sent to parents today.
Cell Phones/Watches
We have sent parents a reminder about cell phones/phone watches. First offense, please take the phone and turn into the front office. It will be returned at the end of the day. For further incidents, parents will be contacted to collect the phone from school.
What could the watches look like?
KT watches

We will be sending a hard copy of the Technology Responsible Use Policy to all students on Monday, August 27th. It should be signed and returned to school by Friday, August 31st. (We will send and accept digital versions for dorm students, and collect an original at conferences.)

Tardy Students
Students arriving after 8:30 (9:00 Fridays) should go directly to the office. If a student comes to your class after this time, they should have a tardy slip from the office. If they do not, send them back to the front office. The office will mark tardy students.

Please help communicate the following procedural updates to students:
In the morning all grade 1-5 students should enter the field by the KISJ sign. Only middle school students should continue up the path towards school.
We're working on sharing the field with middle school in the mornings. Please let your students know that they need to stay in the elementary section. Currently, this is the majority of the field with a small section marked with cones for middle school.
FYI for teachers - This procedure is still being updated, as we work to find a way to ensure all students can be safe on campus in the mornings. The goal is to interrupt our existing procedures as little as possible, as our elementary students have been routined for these already.
Whistles were ordered for the staff that requested them. Please ensure that you connect with the person doing recess break with you, so there is always at least one whistle on the field.
Please ensure that your students are aware of emergency evacuation procedures. Every student should know his/her homeroom line number. If you do not have an emergency binder and map, please let April know. Clear holders for the binders will be installed in the classrooms that are missing them.
Continue to leave feedback on any procedures that need to be reconsider for our supervision of students.
