Weekly Update September 17th to 21st

TED Talk of the Week
The TED talk this week is a fun look at how the pencil was created through Design Thinking over many years and different locations.

Thank you
  • Everyone, for making Parent Information Night a reality. The entire ES pulled together and helped each other when needed.  We are all part of an amazing ES team!
  • Allan, Francis, Sarah Ko, Mareena, and Ryk for watching student auditions and helping to determine who will be in the ES musical.  It was great seeing how hard our students worked on the auditions.
  • Everyone who contributed to the ES Team Building Breakfast on Friday.  It was a nice way to cap off a very successful week. For those who did not have an opportunity to contribute, we will have another Team Building Breakfast soonish.
  • Nicole Dines, for creating the beautiful dot day mural.  This was a fun ES community project.

Communication in the ES
This week we had our 1st Parent Information Night and it was a HUGE success!  According to parent feedback, the vast majority preferred Parent Information Night to the Coffee Talks of the past.  Almost 100% of parents found the information given during the classroom presentations informative and useful. This is evidence that the ES is well on our way to improving communication with our parent community!

Grading and PS Instructions and Timelines
Everything you need to know is contained in this presentation.  If you have any questions talk to your TL, Mareena, or me.

Professional Growth Plan Collaboration
School-wide evaluators are collaborating with Rick Odum, Director of Teaching and Learning to calibrate our feedback on lesson observations. Teachers, we need your help with this.  I would like to welcome anyone interested in providing a 20min video snapshot of a lesson to please communicate with me directly. Your willingness to offer a lesson for us to calibrate our feedback on would be greatly appreciated in respect to the continued growth and development of our division and school.

Professional Growth Portfolio
PD with Ryk on September 21st. Portfolio copies are already created for ES, so no need for teachers to create a copy. More info to come at next week’s PD.

From the Dorms
If you are sponsoring an activity or event that involves dorm students being off campus or requires early departure or late arrivals please be sure to contact the Dorm Deans (C. Wampler and B. Fisk) a minimum of four (4) days in advance so we can best support you, the activity, and our dorm students.

Updates From Mareena

Upcoming Faculty events
Saturday, October 20:
Your Leadership Team would like to invite you to decompress after the busy Family Weekend by joining them for pizza and beer following the close of the weekend.  3:15 to 4:15 on the HS rooftop if it rains we will be in the HS Mini Pac
Teacher Appreciation Dinner(s)
This year, in order to address the complications of space and child care, we will be honoring teachers in divisional celebrations instead of a school-wide party.  We hope that this will allow more teachers to plan to be a part of this annual event that is intended to pay tribute to the commitment that teachers at KISJ show every day.
Please mark your calendars for the following:
Elementary School: February 15th or 16th
Middle School: January 25th or 26th
High School: February 23

From the ELL Coordinator
Masha Patterson has been very kind to be our first featured teacher.  As all of us know, we target language acquisition by making sure our lessons have strategies, scaffolding, and activities that target one, two or all of the domains. These 4 language domains are listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Here's Masha's short explanation of how she covered three of the domains while at the same time making sure her students were engaged.
"Playing a language card game in order to practice cause and effect and to reinforce prior knowledge before applying it to academic text. Domains practiced: listening, writing and speaking."
If you have a short video or pictures that showcase the integration of ELL strategies, please send me a link to the video or pictures and a short explanation. ahampton@kis.ac
Again, way to go Masha Patterson! Our school has top notch teachers.
