TED Talk of the Week
The TED Talk for this week highlights the power of collaboration and what it will mean for the future of Science research.
Thank you!
- Mareena, for leading the faculty discussion on Monday afternoon. A lot of valuable data was collected that will lead to rich discussion at the ES LT meeting.
- G1 team, for welcoming parents to the first-grade Zoo. It was great hearing our experts share what they learned about their animals.
- John C and Dan H for planning and organizing for MIT students to be in the ES all week.
- Judy, Maddie, and Mareena for helping with the swim meet at BHA on Thursday.
Communication in the ES
Over the break, I attended the Search Job Fair. It was a great opportunity to speak with candidates about all the ways we support student learning and the exciting experiential learning opportunities our students have at KISJ. This time also provided me the opportunity to reflect on what an amazing ES team we have. Before the chaos of the 2nd semester begins, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on how much your team has accomplished in a very short amount of time.
Q3 Letter to Parents
Here is the Q3 letter that was sent to parents.
Let’s Chat
This week I have 3 times booked for you to come in and chat or I can come to your classroom to read.
Monday 11:30 to 12:00
Tuesday 9:00 to 9:30
Wednesday 3:00 to 3:30
Professional Growth Plan Updates
According to the Teaching & Learning Timelines, all teachers need to complete 2 peer observations this year. As a reminder, in the ES, teachers can video and complete one of the peer observation feedback forms on themselves. You do not need to share these videos unless you wish to.
The 2nd part of the PGP is the Mid Year Reflection. On slide 10 of your personal Professional Growth Portfolio “Summarize the progress you’ve made towards your goals. Be sure to be specific about what successes you’ve had and what challenges you have faced.” We will look at these with during the week of January 28th to February 1st during your grade level team meeting time.
The Months Ahead (January - February)
In response to feedback, here is the schedule for the months ahead. The purpose of this information is to provide clarity as you plan ahead and prioritize tasks.
The biggest task for Jan & Feb is the Annual Order. Here are the guidelines and forms. Your TL will be able to guide you through the process but come see me if you have any questions.
Dates to Remember
Jan 18 - Annual Order team planning time (Friday morning)
Jan 25 - Orders given to Leads
Feb 15 - Leads examine and submit the orders to Principals
Feb 15 - Leads examine and submit the orders to Principals
Feb 23 - Make-up day for inclement weather (not needed yet)

Updates From Mareena
Happy New Year!
Uniforms
A change from our discussion Monday: Please note that students should wear black shoes to school every day. The laces of these shoes should be black or white, and not “jazzed up” with special laces. This is in order to enforce the expectation that other uniform pieces cannot be customized or altered in appearance.
Duties
Thank you for ensuring that inclement weather duties are included in your substitute plans! A request for dialogue about attending to duties was brought up through faculty council. I’ve added my response to the agenda of the upcoming ES Townhall.
Gift of Time!
Please come by the ES office to schedule your holiday gift of time. Please note that we cannot cover everyone’s duty in one week - so look ahead and schedule a day that an extra bit of time will mean the most :)
PubPD - Focus on Wellness
PubPD is back - Tuesday, January 22nd at 7pm at Smokehouse. Twitter account not required to participate!
#PubPDAsia is a unique PD initiative that combines a face to face session with the power of Twitter. Across Asia, groups of educators will come together to chat in person on the topic for the month: Wellness. The event poster includes the questions for this topic.
Each group will also connect with the others through the use of Twitter and the chat hashtag.
We're excited to be hosting a Jeju location for this event. This is an amazing way to connect both with our local and global communities.
Communication in the ES
Your feedback is appreciated as the ES strives to improve communication. As always, submissions are confidential. I have posted the QR code on my office door for continued feedback as the year progresses.
Here is the ES Suggestion Box. This form is for ideas, solutions or comments about issues that matter to the ES community.
