The TED talk this week continues the discussion that Jennifer Abrams started. This talk looks at how wisdom can be shared by all the generations currently in the workplace.
Thank you
- Everyone for a successful 1st PTSC. We all pulled together to increase the communication between our parents, teachers, and students!
- Rhys, for organizing the DRAGON Dialogue student performance. It was fun seeing our G3 students lead parents in a warmup activity.
- Sara R and Jordanna, for the Wonders of Watercolors art exhibition. What a great way to end a successful elective!
- Allan, for your tireless efforts towards making Super Sports Saturday a reality. I can’t wait to see how much fun our students will have!
- TAs and ECE team for being flexible and helping take on even more duties during the construction of MS gym!
- Thank you to all the coaches who are making Super Sports Saturday a reality: Sean Kara O’Connor, Allan, Rhys, Matthew, Judy, Scott, and Nicole. Also, think you to all the volunteers: Alana, Mareena, Michelle, Kathryn, Jocelyn, John E, Kelly, Angela, Brandon, Paul, and Lindsay. I can not wait to see how excited our students will be this Saturday!
- Rhys, for showing us all what a DRAGON you are! It couldn’t have been easy to wear that sweat box.
- Everyone who helped organize and lead the first assembly: Cody, Sara, Rhys, Francis, Nicole, Jenni, Sean, Elaine, Jessica, Jordanna, Theresa, and Dan H. It was a huge success and a great way to kick off the fundamental four!
- Sarah Ko for her guest appearance at Kids Camp to ensure everyone got to eat lunch.
This week the ES had our first PTSC of the year. The change of format from report card narratives to face to face interactions allows for all stakeholders to engage in meaningful rich dialogue that focuses on goal setting and DRAGON values. The initial feedback from parents has been very positive. There will be a survey sent to parents and teachers this week to receive more detailed feedback.

Koreana magazine … Jeju Island special feature
One of the unique things about being an international educator is that we have the opportunity to live in places with often complex yet interesting histories and cultures - Jeju is both those things. The Summer 2018 edition of Koreana focuses upon Jeju Island - An Island of stones, legends and lore.
An article by Lee Chang-guy looks at the historical legacy of the stone walls of Jeju Island. They served many different functions - as a horse enclosure known as a jatseong during the Joseon Dynasty, to stone weirs for fishing called wondam, and field fences known as batdam which were used to protect crops from the strong winds and prevent soil erosion. The history of stone walls is long and complex, with records going as far back as the 13th century.
Another article looks at the Jeju Stone Park and features some of the mythological stories of Jeju Island, including the Seolmundae Halmand (Grandmother Seolmundae) who is a giant goddess featured in Jeju’s creation myth.
A third article focuses upon the stone tombs that we frequently see scattered around the island. They have a complex history with one of the more interesting aspects being that the size and shape of the walls are indicative of the family status of the deceased.
Finally, something that has a close proximity to KIS, is the history of the onggi or stone kilns. Located next to Norminae on the track that goes from the GEC to the 1136 is one of these traditional stone kilns. This art form was becoming obsolete in the mid 20th century, but is now making a resurgence as a unique feature of Jeju Island.
The HS library has a physical copy of the Korean magazine, however, it can also be viewed online at https://koreana.or.kr/home/homeIndex.do

Teacher Appreciation Dinner(s)
This year, in order to address the complications of space and child care, we will be honoring teachers in divisional celebrations instead of a school-wide party. We hope that this will allow more teachers to plan to be a part of this annual event that is intended to pay tribute to the commitment that teachers at KISJ show every day.
Please mark your calendars for the following:
Elementary School: February 15th or 16th
Middle School: January 25th or 26th
High School: February 23
