The TED talk this week continues our look at design thinking and how it is changing our world. This idea will shake up our driving habits and create a mesh network as vast as the Interstate.
Thank you
- Judy, Scott, and Nicole for taking our swim team to NLCS for their first meet of the season. Our team did great and had fun!
- Mareena, for organizing coverage for those who went to Adaptive Schools training on Thursday and Friday.
- Everyone, as you continue to work on inputting grades into PS and information into the Conference Notes. This is a busy time but it is meanginful work that will help everyone
Communication in the ES
This week members of our ES LEadership team attended Adaptive Schools training. This PD will help our leaders facilicate more effective meetings that allow everyone to have input and be more resourceful.
Classroom Library Information
For your reference here is the Library Presentation Matt created to walk us through the process. As mandated by the Korean business office, we need to have an accurate inventory of our classroom libraries. Booksource makes this process very easy as well. Once you have exported your classroom lists put them in this folder using this naming convention: Class name, Room number, teachers, month/year (2D/E207/Perry-10/18). We ask that all lists are submitted by October 5th. If you need more time please contact Mareena.

Super Sports Saturday
On October 13 our ES student-athletes will be taking part in SuperSport Saturday - the major event of Season 1 here in the GEC. All three of our sports (swimming, Cross Country Running, and Soccer) will be competing. For us, this is means close to 200 of our students all eligible to compete on the same day.
I am hoping some of you may be able to help us out and volunteer for the event. This is a great opportunity to cheer on our kids and help out our ES athletics program. As well it counts towards your event dorm commitments requirement. If you help at 2 sports you can get credit for 2 events. Please fill out this form if you are interested.
Family Weekend Information
Here is the finalized schedule for the two days. Please read it carefully and ask Mareena or Jim if you have any questions.
All teachers are asked to wear “formal” dress for both days. Ties for males and the equivalent for females.

PTSC Expectations
In preparation for next week's Parent Teacher Student Conferences on Friday, October 12th, please ensure your classrooms are ready to welcome visitors. This includes bulletin boards, which should be filled with student work, class units, or anchor charts. Please move any clutter from desks and shelves, so the room looks inviting and welcome for guests.
Staff should be dressed professionally - men should wear a tie and women should be in semi-formal attire.
Construction Updates
There are updates to the procedures for student arrival, dismissal, and fire drills due to the construction. The fire drill and supervision documents will be updated to reflect these. Please look for an invitation from Mareena to review the things that are most pertinent to your grade level.
Student iPad update from John
There have been some changes to the iPad setup process that we have communicated to parents. We have offered to help parents change over to this “new” system during PTSC: they will need to take the child’s iPad after their conference and it should be returned by Monday. Not every parent will do this and that is fine: it is not a required change. However, at the end of each of your PTSC, please remind class parents that if they need any help from Hyde and John with iPads or specific apps, they can stop by E206!
Below is a summary of the changes. Teachers can see the full details in the updated document here.
Based on teacher feedback and what we have observed, the parent setup for iPads has been updated. Instead of using Family Sharing, parents will now be recommended to log into iTunes with their parent account and change their password settings to allow free downloads without a password.
Since passwords are hard to remember and many apps are free, this will make it much easier for your students to install apps when needed. If students are installing apps they shouldn’t be, please have conversations with them and have them delete the apps - that is part of learning to be a good student and digital citizen.
Students and parents will not lose any of their work or shared items in this process and they can always go back to using Family Sharing later if they’d like.
Upcoming Faculty events
Saturday, October 20:
Your Leadership Team would like to invite you to decompress after the busy Family Weekend by joining them for pizza and beer following the close of the weekend. 3:15 to 4:15 on the HS rooftop if it rains we will be in the HS Mini Pac
Teacher Appreciation Dinner(s)
This year, in order to address the complications of space and child care, we will be honoring teachers in divisional celebrations instead of a school-wide party. We hope that this will allow more teachers to plan to be a part of this annual event that is intended to pay tribute to the commitment that teachers at KISJ show every day.
Please mark your calendars for the following:
Elementary School: February 15th or 16th
Middle School: January 25th or 26th
High School: February 23
